FAQ

Where are you located?

I have an office conveniently located at the following address:

9362 Teddy Lane, Suite 206Lone Tree, CO 80124

Do you accept insurance?

I do not accept insurance because companies require that I provide them with a diagnosis for your symptoms. This label becomes part of your permanent record.

If you’d like, I can provide you with an invoice (including a diagnostic code) for my services, and you can submit for reimbursement.

What about your rates and reduced fees?

My sessions are $145 for an hour session. I do not offer reduced rates at this time.

What if I have to cancel a session?
I ask that you let me know 24 hours before your session if you need to cancel. Otherwise, I will charge for the session, and I hate doing that. So, please let me know so that we can reschedule.
How many sessions will it take?

Fourteen with an additional 2 sessions a couple months later. Well, that’s a baseline. I have some clients who like to continue to see me regularly after the initial 14 sessions. They’re often in a high-maintenance relationship or their job is really stressful.

Other clients see me only a few times and feel that they’ve gotten what they need. But, for the most part, we’re probably looking at around 16 sessions.

Will I have to cry?
I don’t know. Do you have tears that need to come out? If so, it doesn’t bother me at all. I’m ready for tears – as well as red-faced rage and anything in-between.
Can I curse in your sessions?

Yep. All manner of obscenities are welcome because let’s face it, you’ve bottled up these feelings for a long time. Personally, I use cursing for effect so that you won’t hear it much from me.

Is there someone you won’t see?

I don’t work with kids or teenagers. Also, I don’t work with clients who have full-on addictions. What does that mean? Substance abuse or a behavioral habit is not addiction. To me, an addiction is a body-centered parasite that can ultimately kill you if it’s allowed to overtake your life. Some people have what I call abuse loops. For example, binging for two weeks, then taking four weeks off is a loop. It’s not quite an addiction, but it’s really close. We’ll figure this out when we talk in our consult or first session. I know some good addiction counselors and overnight facilities if your situation calls for it.

Why go to therapy when I can just talk to friends?

Put simply, if you could have resolved these issues on your own or with friends, you would have by now. Good friends have your back. They will listen and probably either totally agree with you or totally disagree.

But they won’t really provide a roadmap to resolve the issues. I’m sure I will like you as a person, but I’m not your friend. I will challenge you and ask what you might consider being awkward questions to help you resolve the issues.

Do you only offer online counseling?

Yes, if you live in Colorado we can meet virtually as well as in-person.

Do you offer coaching or consulting?

Yes. Check out my consulting practice at https://www.TouchbaseServices.com.

I specialize in helping teams integrate after major change like layoffs or M&A. I also work with leadership teams to identify their core values and define a culture for the organization that will help them achieve their goals.

I’m the CEO of the world, why can’t I fix this myself?

I’ve worked with CEOs, VPs, salespeople, and managers of brand name companies you’d probably recognize. And clearly, this kind of personal stuff is tricky, no matter who you are.

Unfortunately, we don’t learn how to self-soothe, resolve emotional triggers, or stop excessive drinking in college or corporate trainings. Most corporate trainers offering emotional intelligence trainings offer “sage-on-stage” approaches that “talk at you.” My approach uses your life as a training ground, so you don’t just learn the steps – you live them.

In my approach, we get gritty, and you learn this stuff for yourself. And if you really are CEO of the world, this will make you a much better leader for your people and a better man for your family.

Why did you leave your corporate career?

As a manager, I naturally gravitated toward the people-issues. I would hear the soft knock on my office door and hear the words, “Uh Ric, can I talk to you?”

They would spill their guts, and I’d listen while thinking, “I should be a freakin’ therapist.” And here I am.

It was a great run. I miss the team-oriented projects, especially the intense startup environment. But, the trade-off of being a therapist instead is absolutely worth it.

What’s your sport?

When I started coaching my kid’s soccer team, I fell in love with the game all over again. I played soccer from 2nd grade through 12th grade, but being a coach was a new perspective for me.

Also, in March, I tend to go a little crazy over college basketball.
