Therapy for male depression is not going to stop you from having occasional bouts of sadness or feeling blue. It's going to help you develop habits of thinking and behaving that help you "reboot" or find reasons to engage in life. Depression for men can lead to issues like headaches, relationship issues, stress, problems sleeping, feeling numb and angry outbursts that come out "sideways" (you don't know why you feel this way). Often, these eruptions result from frustrations that have been simmering for a while. 


Do You Have Depression?

Five of the following nine signs must be present for two weeks for someone to receive a diagnosis of depression. (2013 American Psychiatric Association DSM-5):

  • Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day.

  • Diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all activities.

  • Weight gain, or loss of or significant change in appetite.

  • Insomnia or hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness).

  • Psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day, observable by others. 

  • Fatigue or loss of energy.

  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt.y to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness.

  • Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness.

  • Recurrent thoughts of death, or suicidal ideation or attempted suicide. 

We often experience depression as an interruption to our normal mood. Like dark clouds passing overhead with clear skies to follow. Sometimes though, dark clouds can stay for a long time. Even just a few of the signs above can significantly impact your life.
